Dianthus caryophyllus is a perennial. It produces double flowers in red, pink, white or yellow in the spring. Bluish green leaves and leafy stems often become woody at the base. It prefers afternoon shade in hot inland areas with alkaline soil. Encourage more blooms by deadheading. Carnations have a faint fragrance and make excellent cut flowers.

A thorny, deciduous shrub growing 4-6' high and as wide, Red Japanese Barberry can be contained with some light pruning in winter. Its purplish-red leaves contrast beautifully against a dark green background. It prefers full sun and regular watering, more in hot summer months. This is a great barrier plant.

The Privet honeysuckle is a low-spreading, semi-evergreen shrub with stiff, horizontal branches. Its dark green, privet-like leaves are ovate or oblong in shape, and display translucent berries.
